Nestle Purina Parking Lot

St. Louis, Missouri

In downtown St. Louis, an ordinary-looking parking lot sits atop a location with a dark and unsettling past. Today, the property associated with Nestlé Purina’s corporate headquarters occupies the site of the Gratiot Street Prison—a Civil War-era prison known for suffering, overcrowding, and tragedy.

The building began as McDowell Medical College, operated by Dr. Joseph McDowell, before being seized by Union authorities and converted into a military prison in December 1861. The prison held Confederate prisoners, sympathizers, guerrillas, spies, and others considered enemies of the Union. At times, as many as 2,000 prisoners were confined there, despite an official capacity of about 1,200.

After the Civil War, the prison building eventually disappeared, and the site was incorporated into the modern city. But according to local paranormal lore, the history of Gratiot Street Prison may not have ended with its demolition.

Stories have circulated for years about strange activity in the parking lot at night. Employees and others have reportedly described seeing shadowy figures wandering between the parked cars, sometimes resembling Confederate prisoners. Some accounts describe the figures appearing briefly before disappearing without explanation.

Whether these sightings are genuine paranormal encounters or simply stories inspired by one of St. Louis’ most disturbing historical locations remains impossible to prove. Still, there is something undeniably eerie about standing in a modern parking lot while knowing that beneath the surrounding streets once stood a prison where thousands of people were confined during one of the darkest periods in American history.
