The site became the scene of one of the bloodiest Civil War battles in Missouri on September 27, 1864. Confederate Major General Sterling Price led approximately 8,000 troops against about 1,500 Union defenders commanded by Brigadier General Thomas Ewing Jr. Confederate soldiers repeatedly charged across open ground toward the fort, but intense Union rifle and artillery fire forced them back. The assault failed, leaving roughly 1,000 Confederate soldiers killed or wounded.

Knowing that his ammunition was running low and another attack could be disastrous, Ewing ordered his troops to evacuate during the night. Before leaving, Union soldiers blew up the fort's powder magazine, leaving a massive crater in the center of the earthworks.

Today, Fort Davidson is preserved as a historic site and memorial to the soldiers who fought and died there. But some visitors and paranormal investigators believe the battlefield's violent past has left behind more than history. Stories tell of mysterious footsteps, shadowy figures moving across the grounds, and the distant sound of cannon fire when no battle is taking place. Some Civil War reenactors have also reported experiencing unexplained activity at the site.

Whether these reports are truly supernatural or simply the atmosphere of a battlefield filled with tragic history, Fort Davidson remains a fascinating—and eerie—place to visit.
